Each student is encouraged to keep a personal martial arts notebook. You will be given a broad range of information as you invest in learning the martial arts. A personal notebook will assist you in keeping track of the learned material that you will obtain as you study and train. Notebooks should contain:
- copy of each rank and test notice
- copies of seminar certificates
- test certificates
- test essays, etc.
Your notebook will be reviewed when you become a candidate for ShoDan (Black Belt).
Structure your notebook to contain a minimum of the following categories:
- Punches
- Kicks
- Blocks
- Stances
- Binds, Joint locks
- Ukemi
- Self defense techniques
- Kata/ forms
- Glossary
- Principles/ concepts
Also include other learned information that you feel is beneficial to you as a martial artist. You will also want to include personal notes and a personal biography.
In a three ring binder, use the following format to section your material for easy retrieval when updating or referencing your learned material:
- Test notices/ sheets/ rank certificates
- Seminar/ special event certificates
- Self defense techniques - listed and written-out
- Kata/ forms (empty hand/ weapons)
- Punches
